The ViPrimePLUS African Horse Sickness Virus RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of African Horse Sickness virus genomes in blood samples.
African Horse Sickness is an infectious, noncontagious disease that affects horses, mules, zebras and donkeys. Mules and horses in particular are most vulnerable to this disease. The responsible pathogen, the African Horse Sickness virus (AHSV) is a double-stranded RNA virus with a family of nine serotypes, of which only the 9th serotype is endemic and widespread. The disease exhibits 4 distinct forms; 1) pulmonary form which causes serious lung congestion that leads to lung failure and death, 2) cardiac form which is characterized by edema around the face and neck with 50% mortality risk, 3) mixed form which exhibits a combination of both pulmonary and cardiac symptoms, resulting in 70-80% mortality risk, and 4) mild fever form which is rarely fatal and usually seen in donkeys and zebras. Thus, this is where real time PCR plays a role to provide a sensitive, non-serological test for disease screening.
